Is IEEE 802.1X Ready for General Deployment?Added by Papergrl
Description:
Wireless LANs have been recognized as insecure for some time, especially for their lack of data confidentiality and access control. This paper examines the suitability of deploying IEEE 802.1X as the principal authentication mechanism for Colorado State University's wireless network. After careful consideration of wireless security issues and how 802.1X addresses those issues, it was decided that CSU should not incorporate 802.1X into its wireless network at this time. Two significant challenges facing wireless local area network (WLAN) designers and administrators are maintaining privacy and preventing unauthorized access. Network security is often said to be a compromise between convenience and protection. That it is especially true for a wireless network, as the convenience provided to roaming wireless users is facilitated by broadcasting packets to anyone with compatible equipment within range of a transmitting device.
