The primary function of a packet voice gateway is to provide the interworking function between traditional voice telephony links and packet network links. For example, an Internet telephony gateway performs a translation between compressed speech packetized in Internet Protocol (IP) and Pulse Code Modulated (PCM) speech over Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) links.
